Why should I perform a name search before registering my company?
Each company needs a name to differentiate itself from other existing business entities. The name shall be used in all of it’s business transactions, marketing or while dealing with any other third parties. Therefore, the name must be distinct from the other registered entity to avoid confusion to the public.
How can I apply for a name search?
Anybody can be the applicant for the name search process. The applicant may either choose:
(i) to reserve a name however it can only be reserved for the maximum number of thirty (30) days upon the approval date; or
(ii) directly process for incorporation through Direct Incorporation application.
Who can apply for the entity’s name search?
Anybody either a professional user or an individual user which had registered with MyCoID account can apply for a company’s name search application via MyCoID platform.
What should I observe before finding a company’s name?
For general words that are not gazetted or controlled by other authorities or agencies, applicant may proceed to apply for the said name. You may refer to the
Guidelines on Company Names for further details.
Here are some general guidelines that you need to know when naming a company.

Use proper grammar when mixing Bahasa Malaysia and English words.

When using a foreign word other than Bahasa Malaysia or English, provide a screenshot meaning of the word.

The usage of symbols are allowed accordingly.
i) symbol “–” ; for doubled words. ii) symbol “.” ; allowed for salutations. iii) symbol “ ‘ “ ; to show belonging. iv) symbol “& ” ; to represent the word ‘and’ or ‘ dan’. v) symbol “( ) ” ; allowed at the end of the company name.

“Company”, “Co”, “Syarikat”, “Perbadanan”, “Corporation”, “Incorporated”, “Holding”, “Group”, “Kumpulan”, “Malaysia”, “(M)”, “Msia”, “Consortium”, “Konsortium”, “Consolidated".

However, if the name or word is gazetted, controlled or requires a certificate of eligibility, applicants must include a letter of consent or the certificate from the respective party and is subject to the availability of names and provisions under the Companies Act 2016.
Can I request to extend the validity of my company’s approved name reservation?
Approved name reservations are only valid for thirty (30) days however if required, the applicants may apply for Extension of Time under Name Reservation until hundred and fifty (150) days to the Registrar.
What are the basic fees for name search applications?

What are the scenarios that may cause or requires an Appeal to the Minister?
If your previous name search application has been rejected by the Registrar, you may request for an appeal to the Minister. The applicant however must prepare to lodge the followings:
- A written letter addressed to the Minister to justify the appeal;
- A copy of rejection notification email from MyCoID;
- Any other relevant supporting documents as instructed in the rejection email; and
- Payment of fee for appeal worth RM300.00.
The applicant must ensure that the appeal process to the Minister to be initiated within thirty (30) days after receiving the rejection notification email from MyCoID. Currently, all appeal process must be submitted to the nearest SSM Office.
